The Unexpected Technique I Use When I'm Lacking Confidence
This tiny trick has helped me improve my self confidence
You know one thing that has massively helped me with my confidence?
Tracking my period.
Sounds weird but since monitoring where I am in my cycle, I can recognise that, in the moments where I’m doubting myself, feeling like an elephant and disgusted by what’s in the mirror, I know it’s not ‘me’ talking.
It’s my hormones, the little buggers.
This happens on a monthly basis.
There’ll be anywhere from 3-7 days out of the month where I struggle with anxiety, I hate every single item in my wardrobe and I feel like a massive fraud/failure/imposter/disappointment to everyone who knows me.
This is what I’ve started to refer to as a micro knock.
A micro knock in confidence is an event that sees your confidence dip temporarily and then rise again once the event is over.
So in this case, once my period’s arrived, my confidence comes back.
The problem is, without this awareness, it can feel like you’ve suddenly ruined all the mindset work you’ve ever done and gone completely back to square one in terms of your self perception.
Typically when we feel our confidence has been knocked, we can associate it to something: rejected by a client, ghosted on a dating app, only 5 likes on Instagram for the third post in a row.
But when it’s hormonal, there’s no event that we can pinpoint things on.
We just don’t feel confident.
And I don’t know about you but as soon as those negative feelings take over, it’s really easy for me to spiral into a state of utter despair and fear that I’ll never feel confident again.
During these moments, there are two things you can do:
1️⃣ Accept that this is simply a micro knock and it’ll be over soon. Be kind to yourself, take a day (or two or three) off and wallow in feeling like shit.
2️⃣ When you’re feeling ready, you can Think FIRST. This is my 5 step method to help you reclaim your confidence and get back on track when you’ve faced a challenge.
This is hugely beneficial when you have something you need to be confident for.
For example: last week I was asked out on a date. My period was a week late and I was in the midst of a micro knock. I couldn’t cancel as he’d already booked tickets to something (the Twist Museum in London) so I had to shift myself back into confidence.
It worked!
And my period arrived 3 hours into the date. Thank you mother nature.
On Thursday 23rd February, I’ll be revealing my simple yet effective Think FIRST method so you can always get your confidence back when it’s gone awol.
Yes, there’ll be a replay 😘
Remember, these micro knocks are only temporary. Just because you’re not feeling confident in one moment, doesn’t mean it’s going to last forever.
